Main points: What is Distant Reiki? A gentle healing modality harnessing the universal life force, done distantly instead of in-person. Why Distant Reiki? Because sometimes our bodies can’t be as connected as our hearts always are. How Does it Work? An attuned practitioner guides healing energy to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies, and activates your innate healing mechanism. Why does it Work? We are all energy. Energy is not restricted by time and space. More about Distant Reiki: I love distant (also known as distance) Reiki. I came to it sometime after I started doing in-person sessions, and was delighted to experience how profound it is for me on the giving end, and how deeply impactful it is for the people who receive it. I spent many years living in Japan, and because so many of my friends, loved ones and clients were abroad, distant Reiki organically became a part of my life. Then, when the pandemic hit, virtually everyone was living “distant” to everyone else, and “online” became our primary way of being in touch. More than that, we were experiencing so much stress, personally and collectively, that Reiki became a true balm for many, myself included, during that time, and beyond. Reiki, of course, is a whole other, Internet-free experience of being “online”! Simply put, distant Reiki is a healing modality that is performed without physical touch, and this kind of Reiki can be performed no matter how far apart the practitioner and recipient are. One way I love thinking about it is: When you have a deep, nourishing, unconditional love for someone, does that love grow any less the farther away they are from you geographically? Healing sessions being done over vast spaces can be a challenging idea, and this is perfectly understandable. After all, we are still living in a “seeing is believing”, very material-based world, and we’ve been conditioned to be wary of anything that might tinge on the invisible, intangible or unknown. But it hasn’t always been this way! There have been many eras in many parts of the world where energy medicine has flourished, and this holds true today as well. The Age of Reason in the West corresponded to a dogmatic insistence that progress means focusing on what we can see and control, and then controlling it as much as we can. While the scientific and technological progress that ensued has been profound, this trend also had the effect of significantly reducing the realm of human activity, interest and experience, and we started to see a disappearance of the holistic, alternative medicines and healing techniques that had served so many for so long. The interesting thing is that in so many ways, science has already caught up to what mystics and energy healers have known for so long – matter is nothing more than energy in condensed form, and all life and matter consists of energy. We are all, very literally, energy bodies, living in a cosmic soup of energy! What’s more, energy (and matter, which is energy) cannot die – it only changes from one form to another. As wild as it sounds, if we are alive (and you certainly are, reading this!) than you have always been alive, and will always be alive, in one form or another. In this light, can you imagine how far and wide your energy has traveled, how much you’ve experienced life, and how many you have contacted and how many have encountered you, on an energetic level? It’s truly amazing to think about. Then there is the quantum theory of nonlocality, which acknowledges that particles that are not physically or causally united can know each other and respond to each other over great distances, and can be, therefore, connected. I like to imagine the incredible situation of people using telephones for the first time, shocked that they could hear each other across the city or country without seeing each other – but in this case, no telephone wires are needed! With all this in mind, it’s not a huge leap to think about things in a different way: that with intention, and guided by love, we can connect with anyone, and offer healing, and have it received. I believe that we already know this intuitively. Have you ever thought about someone, only to have them call, email or text a short while later, to tell you with a smile that they’ve been thinking about you? Or prayer circles that have truly improved the situation of the person being prayed for? If you’ve ever meditated or prayed in the same room with a group of like-minded people, you might have noticed that the energy of the room feels charged. It feels bright, and light, electric, and your own body responds to it by vibrating to this elevated state of energy. Though none of this can be seen physically, it can be felt very palpably (just like the energy of two people having a huge fight can be felt in the room, in a rather more negative way!). I’m not writing all this to “convince” you that the energy around us and within us is mutable and very receptive to healing intentions, but to invite you to consider experiences you might have already had, but haven’t framed in this particular way before. In fact, many clients who come to me for distant Reiki come based on recommendations from friends or acquaintances, and they say: I have no idea how it works, but I’d love to give it a try. Afterwards, they invariably let me know that they felt something, and they are often surprised by this: by how relaxed they feel, how refreshed, that certain emotions came up to be released, that they felt so safe and held in the session, and feel lighter and more resilient in the face of their challenges. I feel so incredibly blessed to have received Reiki attunement to be able to help others in this way, as I have been similarly helped through my own personal and emotional challenges! Just like the healing that happens in-person when I offer gentle-touch Reiki and the client responds to the energy in our relational space, the same kind healing happens over a distance – it’s just that the relational space is larger! But in exactly the same way, during a distant Reiki session, we are setting an intention to share space in the name of the client’s healing and highest good, and I am holding the space between us with love as the energy flows through. It’s truly a beautiful experience. Here’s the way I do it (completely offline, except for making the arrangements!). We decide on a time that works for both of us. Prior to the session, I send you a short meditation for you do in the minutes before the session, to relax and ground into softness, so you’ll be in an ideal receiving mode (this is optional, of course – you might have your own meditation or breathing practice to help you settle). I send you Reiki for 30 minutes and keep the energies open for the 30 minutes after that, as you are continuing to absorb the energy and I am writing a summary of what I experienced while we are still in that delicious bubble of ‘energy soup’ together, which I email to you. I often throw in a Tarot or Oracle card pull as well if it feels right! Our world seems to be getting bigger and smaller at the same time. Time, too, seems to be moving in strange ways, sometimes stretching out, and sometimes almost disappearing. I love when I can share physical space with people, and I am also increasingly grateful for both the Internet and the energy work I’ve been trained in that helps me reach people across the bounds of space and time, as our circumstances ebb and flow in these intense and uncertain times. I would love to meet you there, in that loving, energetic space! Dear beautiful humans of the world, There is something that every single one of shares: We are living through a time of massive transition. Massive. Can you feel it? It’s hard. It hurts. Everything is shaking and trembling and we feel unsteady, unsure. But the beauty of times of transition is that they contain the seeds of deep and lasting transformation. The past few years have absolutely shaken us to the core, haven’t they? But they have also inspired us to reflect on the life we have been living until now and the life we want to live on the other side of all this chaos and unrest. Reflecting leads to making decisions that feel good and aligned with who we want to be, and I believe it’s one of our great superpowers as generators of a beautiful future. I can feel this in my bones, along with a deep calling to help water and nurture these seeds of transformation until we are living in the new world of our dreams. Now is the perfect time to become aware of and cultivate the unique gifts we have to offer the world. The world wants, needs this from us. The future is asking us to come and greet it. Now is the time to contemplate what we already know makes our heart sing – things like kindness, love and compassion – and to discover more of what brings us joy and a sense of purpose. Now is the time to be held in the spirit of these amazing virtues and imagine how we can take the very best of what we have and who we are, and come together. Now is the time to dream! To fall in love with life, again or maybe for the first time, and believe in the immense power we have to make change. It’s hard to step into our gifts and powers; personally, I can be incredibly shy about acknowledging what it is I have to offer the world. But these times call for boldness, and so here we go. For as long as I can remember, I have had two unique gifts: to express myself with words, and to feel the gratitude and awe that come with being deeply in love with life. Over the years, as I have stumbled in fits and starts on this terrifying, wondrous and sacred journey of existence, I’ve been amazed to see these two gifts come together through my poetry, a writing style I could never have imagined would become my main vehicle for expression. Wonders never cease! Meditating on the time of upheaval we are now in, I was inspired to write a poem, and my intuition said to me, “Dream big! Dream that you will be able to share this poem with every single person on Earth. Dream that everyone who reads it will feel a spark in their hearts and that this spark will grow and grow into the fires of purification and change. Use your two great superpowers – words and love – to generate a light so vast it will serve as an antidote to all of the darkness. That’s when the poem that follows was born. It flew onto the page (except for the part where I had to look up how to write love in various languages of the world!). It is my greatest wish that it finds you, wherever you are and however you are feeling, and lifts you, and brings us closer. If it moves you to do so, please share it as far and wide as you can. Let’s build the new world together! Love is Always the Answer Maybe we didn’t know There was a question. Maybe we can feel it Just under the surface As an inner knowing That something isn’t as it should be, Or how we imagined it would be When we were little children Full of excitement for the future, When laughter and play Came so easily, And everything was going to be okay, And dreams were more valuable than gold. Maybe it somehow feels like Life is less than we expected of it, Even as we know deep inside That life has absolutely everything to offer us And nothing should be getting in the way Of pure joy and happiness. But something is getting in the way, Because we are not joyous, And we are not happy. Not really. Not as much as we could be, Almost bursting out of our skin With the unbridled excitement of being. So maybe the questions start coming. Why is there so much suffering in the world? Why is there so much flooding, and burning? Why are we pillaging the Earth We so depend on for our survival? Why do we allow for inequality, and inequity? Why is there so much distance between us, When together we are so strong, And we dream of peace and harmony? Why do we hate, when love feels so much better? The questions keep coming. Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? What do I have to do to be happy? Isn’t there another way Than the way of conflict and war? Isn’t there another way? Well, what if there is nothing We need to do, or to have, To make things right? What if we have everything we need Right here inside of us? What if we could tap the biggest resource there is, And what if this resource is infinite? Love. Love! What if we could spread love As fast as we spread hate? What if we could choose to do this At any moment, like this moment Right here, and right now? Love. Amour. Ahava. Hubun. Szerelem. Pi'āra. Ai. Amore. Liebe. Aroha. Tình yêu. Rạk. Aşk. Kärlek. Miłość. Agápi. Uthando. Sevgi. Prēma. What beautiful sounds That open up the sky To reveal all this magic around us, The sounds of music, of melody, Of synchrony, of oneness. I want to say them again and again, Until love becomes the answer. Until love becomes the way. Dashuri. Ljubav. Kærlighed. Liefde. Armastus. Rakkaus. Cinta kasih. Sne hea. Sa rang. Dragoste. Elsker. Sevgi. Hlub. Love has never left us. It never can. It is we who have strayed far from love, Which is always waiting for our return. What a homecoming it will be. We can love our way out of fear. We can love our way out of anger. We can love our way out of divisiveness. We love our way whole again. We can begin by smiling Until we feel the sun in our hearts And fire in our bellies. We can imagine the world we want Already here, in absolute perfection, And ourselves, in it, also perfect. In this world, love always wins. In this world, our every thought, Word and action come from love, And we meet each other With a deep willingness to listen, and understand, So that we join together With a beautiful empathy, and a healed heart. In this world, We cannot find the boundary Between where we end And everyone else begins, So that when we love ourselves We love everyone else, And when we love everyone else, We love ourselves. And this is the revolution. All this love! This is the revolution, Made by, with and for love, And in love’s name. And we will rejoice. And nothing will ever the same. The best part: We don’t need to take anything away To have the world we want. We don’t need to force The obstacles to love away. We just need to add love, To choose it in every moment, And everything we don’t want or need Will simply fall away Like beautiful autumn leaves. If we add love, anger will fall away. By adding love, fear will slip away. Adding love, division and discord leave us. Let’s add love, and watch sorrow disappear, Until only love remains. Love is not a condition. It is always here. Love is not a reward. You don’t have to work for it. Love is not limited. You don’t have to win to get it. What is love, then? Love is life’s biggest dream. Love is our birthright, and our legacy. Love is expansive without end. Love cannot be negotiated, or defeated. Love just is. Love is you, and I, and everything between. We can’t deserve, or not deserve love, Because love is what we are, And when we know that we are love, We will not be able to imagine Hurt, or sorrow, or anger, or pain In ourselves, or in anyone else. We choose love, and a new world is born. We give love, and the world heals. We receive love, and the world is nourished. We live love, and we will never want again. So, will you join me? Are you ready to sing the song of love And share it with everyone you know? Will you ask for everything you need, And give everything you can? Will you extend your hand to the world, To hold and be held, To comfort and be comforted, To love and be loved? Let us say it, And breathe it, And feel it, And dance it, And live it, In any language, In all languages, Knowing that it is one, The language of love: We are love (And the sun shines brighter) We are love (And the world is kinder) We are love. (And the hope grows bigger) I love you so much. From my heart to yours, xo, Tammy Tammy Stone Takahashi ****Please share this, and make the heart of the world grow bigger.**** My journey with Reiki started around the same time that I started practicing yoga, and both have had a profound effect on how I see the world, and our place in it as human beings capable of so much more vitality and meaning than we often believe is possible. It was at this time that I started to deeply feel how conditioned we are in modern society to prioritize the mind over the body, intellect over wisdom, and being productive over being at peace. In other words, to place value on doing over being – and how much we are suffering for it, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We go to the doctor when we are physically not feeling well, and are treated for the symptoms of our dis-ease. If we are lucky, this is covered by some form of insurance. More often than not, the underlying causes of the problem are not addressed, especially when they are emotional ones – and we know that our physical and emotional selves are intimately connected. Why, I wondered, are we not equally supported when we our suffering is mental and emotional? Why is there still stigma attached to this, and why is there so little social support for our need, in the simplest terms, to feel better, more at ease in our bodies and in our lives? After all, how can we truly get better physically if our emotional needs are not given the compassionate attention they – we – need? I realized that to live a really vibrant and meaningful life, it is so important that we learn how to embody – to truly be in our bodies in a mindful way, and to become comfortable with all the sensations, thoughts and emotions that co-exist in this tapestry of the self, to learn not to attach to these too greatly so that we can come to embrace our power and inherent health and well-being. It has been a profound – and ongoing! – journey. Learning Reiki has been transformational and life-changing. I am so grateful for my Reiki Master, Beatrix Schilcher, in Nong Khai, Thailand, for so generously offering her gifts and wisdom in training me in the traditional, Usui lineage of Reiki. Reiki comes from two root words: Rei – universal, and Ki – life force energy. Reiki is a very gentle form of energy healing in which this universal life force is harnessed by the therapist to bring about calm, peace, relaxation and overall well-being. In a Reiki session, whether hands-on or distant, I am working with this benevolent universal energy to help guide your system in a very gentle way to work through its build-up of patterns of unease in a safe and nurturing environment in which you can relax, release, and truly feel you are coming back to yourself. One of my foundational beliefs is that the human system – body, mind and spirit – has an immense and profound capacity to heal itself. In fact, its default state is health, and this health remains with us as long as we are alive. Our life experiences and conditioning can weigh on us, causing patterns of tension, but the backdrop is always health. Imagine it this way: the very same air, or atmosphere, or energy that exists all around us, enlivening the trees, mountains and oceans of the world, is also sustaining us. There is no reason we cannot come to the same perfect harmony within ourselves and the world around us as these marvels of nature. Given that we are thinking creatures, and that thinking creates tension patterns, it just takes a bit more of an effort, and a conscious desire to heal and come back to our inherent health! They say that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I like to think of these steps as slow, gentle, comfortably-paced steps that will support us as we navigate the fascinating ups and downs that make us the wonderfully unique and multi-faceted people that we are, as we work with intention to arrive back home: the sacred space of comfort and contentment within our bodies and selves. Whether I am working hands-on with gentle touch in a shared space with you, or whether we are in different spaces, or even different cities or countries, I am working with intention to meet you energetically wherever you are, and to create a space in which you feel comfortable to relax, so that the natural healing capabilities of your body can emerge. This can result in powerful feelings of relaxation and “wholeness”. It is also perfectly natural for things to come up during a session, whether this is in the form of strong emotions or sensations in the body, powerful cues that your body has responded to the Reiki and is in the midst of letting go, unwinding and healing. The beautiful thing to keep in mind is that it is impossible for Reiki energy to cause harm – the energy always comes from the deepest place of good, always goes where it is needed, and your body can only respond in a way that promotes healing in your system. It is a beautiful, sacred, and often surprising journey that works in mysterious and profound ways to restore you to wellness and a sense of ease. |
